Best Way to Enjoy Days of Wine and Cheese

Petaluma Cheese Shop

The Petaluma Cheese Shop has become a go-to stop for browsing cheeses, picking up picnic supplies or settling in for a tasting. Inside, the cases are stocked with dozens of cheeses, alongside wine from the ownersโ€™ label, Barber Cellars. The menu, which can be enjoyed in-house or to-go, includes an eight-cheese tasting, fondue, charcuterie boards and sandwichesโ€”making it as much a place to linger as it is to shop.

This business reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of owners Lorraine and Mike Barber, who built their ventures step by step, often guided by curiosity and conversation. Lorraine Barber says the decision to strike out on their own came as a matter of course. โ€œIt was a natural step in our journey. Weโ€™ve both always been good at jumping into what interests us. Mike and I worked plenty of office jobs, and when the opportunity presented itself, we agreed that betting on ourselves was a gamble we wanted to take,โ€ she notes.

That mindset has led them from wine to spiritsโ€”and eventually to cheese. Over time, their tasting room evolved to include food experiences that pair naturally with their wine. When visitors browse the shop today, theyโ€™ll find cheeses selected for both casual grazing and thoughtful pairings, whether someone is building a board for a gathering or simply exploring something new.

The coupleโ€™s process for expanding their business remains collaborative. โ€œFirst, itโ€™s about finding something that we are both interested in and passionate about. Then, itโ€™s about agreement. Weโ€™ve always made it a hard rule both in our personal relationship as well as business that if we donโ€™t agree on something, then it is not the right thing to pursue. So most of our business development comes out of a lot of conversations,โ€ Barber points out.

Listening to customers also helped shape the cheese shop experience. As Barber explains, โ€œWe wanted to listen to our community and give them what they wanted.โ€ Today, that shows up in a space where tasting, shopping and conversation all come together around good cheese. โ€” Kary Hess

Best Way to Say โ€˜Let There Be Sunlightโ€™

Sun First Solar, Bay Area

At the Bohemian, weโ€™re not often ones to quote bestsellers, but once upon a time, somebody said that thereโ€™d be light, and there was. And technically, weโ€™re pretty sure it was solar. Albeit, it wasnโ€™t Sun First Solar (crowned Best Solar by our readersโ€™ poll), which would come much later.

With roots in Northern California dating back to 1984, Sun First has spent more than 40 years delivering clean, renewable solar energy to homes and businesses across Napa, Sonoma and Marin counties, earning trust one rooftop at a time.

This local solar champion has installed more than 100,000 panels and 500 advanced battery systems, helping thousands of Bay Area residents reduce energy costs, increase home value and take meaningful steps toward energy independence. Sun Firstโ€™s commitment to community goes beyond installations; they support local programs like the Marin Community Solar initiative and partner with nonprofits dedicated to expanding access to solar power.

Switching to solar isnโ€™t just smartโ€”itโ€™s financially savvy. Thanks to the Residential Clean Energy Credit, homeowners can claim a 30% federal tax credit on qualified solar energy system costs, including panels and battery storage. This incentive significantly lowers the net investment for solar and turbocharges the return on going green.

Readers clearly appreciate Sun Firstโ€™s blend of expertise, customer service and tangible impact. From handling design, permitting and financing to delivering personalized, locally-rooted service, Sun First makes the transition to solar seamless. As energy prices rise and climate urgency deepens, their leadership in sustainable power shines brighter than everโ€”proof that the best solar is also local, experienced and deeply invested in our communities.

And Kurt Cobain, if youโ€™re out there somewhere reading thisโ€”even if Jesus donโ€™t want you for a sunbeamโ€”your Sun First Solar installation certainly will. โ€” Weeklys Staff

Best Restaurant Named for a Hat

La Toque, Napa

Ask 10 people how to pronounce โ€œtoque,โ€ and youโ€™ll get as many answers as there are pleats in a chefโ€™s hat. For the record, it rhymes with โ€œoakโ€โ€”the Merriamโ€‘Webster entry lists pronunciations *\หˆtลk* and *\หˆtoสŠk*, while the Cambridge dictionary gives the British tษ™สŠk and American toสŠk. However you say it, a toque blanche (French for โ€œwhite hatโ€) is the towering, pleated crown thatโ€™s to chefs what a tiara is to a monarch: an emblem of authority, hygiene and savoirโ€‘faire.

The word toque itself has Arabic roots meaning simply โ€œhat,โ€ and it became fashionable in France during the 1800s when legendary chef Marieโ€‘Antoine Carรชme introduced a white, flatโ€‘topped toque as part of his crisp uniform. Carรชme chose white to signal cleanliness and professionalism, and the hatโ€™s height soon denoted rankโ€”the taller the toque, the higher the kitchen hierarchy.

A persistent culinary myth suggests that the 100 pleats represented 100 ways to cook an egg, reminding apprentices to keep scrambling until they reach mastery. In practice, the hat kept hair and sweat out of the soup and provided ventilationโ€”lofty form meeting utilitarian function.

Fastโ€‘forward a few centuries, and Napa Valleyโ€™s La Toque restaurant embraces this history with panache. Chef/owner Ken Frank founded the first incarnation in Los Angeles in 1979 and moved it to Napa in 1998; today, it sits in the Westin Verasa hotel, where Frank still leads the kitchen. The restaurant held a Michelin star for 14 consecutive years through 2021, and its 2,300โ€‘selection wine cellar received Wine Spectatorโ€™s Grand Award. North Bay Bohemian readers frequently vote Frank as Best Chef, and many locals consider La Toque the finest dining room in town.

Naming a restaurant after the toque is inspired marketing. It hints at classical technique while inviting playful wordplayโ€”diners โ€œtip their hatโ€ to a kitchen that knows how to top itself. โ€” Weeklys Staff

Best Way to Achieve Oneโ€™s Cannabis Relief

Solful Health tinctures

It has been fascinating to watch the cannabis market expand how we commune with the plant. Everyone knows about gummies, but few are aware of the multitude of benefits from cannabinoid tinctures.

Tinctures had once been a big part of medical applications of cannabis, but in the recreational dispensary era, the dropper-delivered products had fallen out of favor. Sebastopol-born cannabis brand Solful has bucked that trend with its Solful Health tincture line.

โ€œWe have hundreds of customers who use tinctures every day to manage their health,โ€ said Solful founder Eli Melrod.

Most of Solful Healthโ€™s 10 full spectrum formulas are designed to be non-intoxicating, and several include the lesser known โ€œacidic cannabinoids,โ€ such as THCA and CBDA, compounds which each are meant to bring their own health benefits.

According to the National Institutes of Health, tinctures offer benefits over edibles and flower, including a more rapid onset via sublingual absorption versus digestion and more precise dosing than burning or vaping. In this writerโ€™s experience, tinctures provide the purest cannabis experience available, without the drawbacks of sugar- and chemical-laden gummies, or lung-irritating smoke and vape.

The medical use of cannabis is personal for Melrod.

โ€œI was inspired by my father, who used cannabis effectively to help him during his pancreatic cancer treatment in 2004,โ€ said Melrod. โ€œHe is still alive today and has been a medical cannabis patient now for 22 years.โ€

In that spirit and with the wish to provide that hope for others, the brandโ€™s newest formula, Relief, promises โ€œprofound effectsโ€ by blending THCA, CBDA, and, for the first time commercially available anywhere, the acidic version of THCV, THCVA.

It is less complicated than it may sound. Just take three times a day, said Mario Cardenas, general manager of the San Francisco branch on Irving Street. โ€œOnce it saturates the blood, you start to get the full benefits throughout the day.โ€ โ€” Michael Giotis

Solful opens their third Sonoma County location in Petaluma this spring, adding to Sebastopol and Healdsburg. Grand Opening is April 10โ€“12.

Best Way to Putter Yourself Into a Great Mood

Guerneville Pee Wee Golf

You all know youโ€™ve driven by Guernevilleโ€™s adorable mini golf spot on your way to spend a day at the river. We know this because thereโ€™s not one of us who hasnโ€™t caught the huge dinosaur that oversees the course, which was built in 1948, out of the corner of our eye when hitting Guerneville on 116.

And yes, you read that correctly, Guerneville Pee Wee Golf has been there since just after WWII. Not only that, but the course was built by a welder by the name of Bill Koplin who asked his brother, Lee Koplin, to come out and help him make his dream a reality. Apparently, the experience was so transformative for Lee Koplin that he went on to become one of the pre-eminent pee wee golf course designers of all time.

Long story short, which is par for the course, the fun little course in a tiny river town inspired a nationwide craze.

If youโ€™ve yet to tee it up at Guerneville Pee Wee Golf, let us give you a quick rundown of what you can expect in addition to the aforementioned huge, snarling T-Rex. When you arrive, you will be greeted by a large red mushroom in the small patio area before you see a big gray whale awaiting you on the first hole. Along the way, thereโ€™s a large cactus, a duck that we canโ€™t name due to not wanting to get Disney licensing involved, as well as a large panther of the pink variety, if you catch our meaning.

Thereโ€™s also a rocket ship, a pink castle, an angry sun and a small gorilla, just to name but a few of the kitchy sculptures joining you on your round. The course also has video games, ping-pong and night golfing available featuring blacklights. Do with that information what you will.

Perhaps the biggest bonus is the recent arrival of The Hot Box BBQ truck, which sits out front and is absolutely killer. โ€” Don R. Lewis

Best Wine Lounge to Write a Novel (or My Name on the Wall)

La Dolce Vita Wine Lounge, Petaluma

Writers like to leave a mark. Literally, figuratively and sometimes on a small engraved plaque at a local wine bar.

Such is the case at Petalumaโ€™s La Dolce Vita Wine Lounge, where a small sign reads, simply, โ€œDaedalus Howell wrote here.โ€ Itโ€™s part artistic gesture, part future historical breadcrumb and entirely appropriate for a place where wordsโ€”and wineโ€”have flowed with unusual generosity.

La Dolce Vita has been my unofficial salon for years, the kind of establishment where a notebook opens easily and sentences tend to follow. At 18ยฝ years old, the lounge remains one of Petalumaโ€™s most enduring portals to wine culture. Located along Petaluma Boulevard at the, ahem, gateway to wine country (take that, Sonoma), it functions less like a single tasting room and more like a worldly dispatch point. Local Sonoma County vintages share the stage with bottles from Italy and Portugal and beyond, turning a casual glass into something like a miniature grand tour.

The concept reflects proprietor Sahar Gharaiโ€™s early experiences in Florence, where intimate enotecas invite patrons to linger over wine as both ritual and conversation. When La Dolce Vita opened in September 2007, a dedicated wine bar in Petaluma felt novel. Nearly two decades later, the loungeโ€™s roughly 60 selectionsโ€”about 40% domestic and 60% internationalโ€”encourage exploration through tastes, glasses, bottles and curated flights.

Inside, the atmosphere leans toward cinematic reverie. Silent classic films flicker above the bar each evening, a knowing wink to Federico Felliniโ€™s La Dolce Vita, whose drifting scenes of nightlife and conversation feel spiritually aligned with the room itself. Itโ€™s a low-lit salon where strangers strike up conversations, regulars introduce newcomers and the occasional writer quietly pretends heโ€™s working on a masterpiece. โ€” Daedalus Howell

The Best Metric for Theatrical Vitality

Visit Sonoma and Napa County stages

Why is there so much live theater produced in the North Bay? How is it that every burg in the area seems to have its own theater company? Itโ€™s no surprise that youโ€™ll find theater in cities like Napa (pop. 76,921) and Santa Rosa (pop. 178,127), but how does theater exist in communities like Yountville (pop. 3,436) and Monte Rio (pop.1,080)?

It could be an abundance of talent aching to be on stage. It could be (the sadly dwindling) availability of arts in our primary and secondary education systems. It could be an abundance of citizen patrons who understand the importance of supporting a vibrant performing arts community.

Whatever the reason(s), itโ€™s somewhat of a curse for a critic whoโ€™s tasked with seeing everything. The blessing for a critic is that thereโ€™s so much variety in what is being produced. Wanna see a classic Broadway musical? Can do. How about an in-your-face examination of a societal problem? Check. What about a different take on an old chestnut? Thatโ€™s possible. Shakespeare? Surely, you jest.

Napa Countyโ€™s Valley Players and Sonoma Countyโ€™s 6th Street Playhouse fit that bill for our readers.

The Valley Players are a vagabond company founded by a group of women 10 years ago with the intent of elevating underrepresented artists in theater, and as such prioritize promoting stories that highlight issues important to women over 40. But fear not, everyoneโ€™s welcome in and at their shows. They perform in various venues throughout Napa County.

6th Street Playhouse traces its roots back to 1972 and the Santa Rosa Players. It performs mostly mainstream musicals on its large stage, but sneaks theatrical outliers onto its smaller Monroe Stage. Itโ€™s fascinating when the audiences mix.

Both have loyal attendees, but would be very happy to welcome new visitors to their venues.

Itโ€™s frequently said by some that North Bay audiences donโ€™t travel. Prove them wrong.

Go see a show. Somewhere.

Anywhere.

Best Way to Celebrate the North Bay

The Bohemianโ€™s annual ode to the Best

Once more unto the ballots, dear readers. Itโ€™s that time of year when we pause our regularly scheduled existential fretting and turn our attention to something vastly more civic minded: the Best of the North Bay.

In a world that apparently has an endless appetite for chaos, this remains one of our favorite ritualsโ€”an annual census of excellence conducted not by algorithms, but by actual humans.

And in proper North Bay fashion, we celebrate with a blend of earnest pride and gentle self-mockery. Because if we canโ€™t lovingly tease our kombucha-sipping, pinot-swilling selves, then we risk taking it all far too seriously. And nobody wants that. Especially Marin, who thinks we stole its mojo. JK. Mostly.

Inside these pages lies your curated compass: the standout experiences that remind that weโ€™re not just a high-end tourist destination but a community bemused by all the fuss.

Think of it as a living archive of what we value right nowโ€”proof that taste, in all its forms, still matters. But the real story isnโ€™t what won. Itโ€™s who voted. You did. You rallied for your favorite bartender, your trusted mechanic, your beloved bookstore. You cast ballots not just for businesses, but for the people who show up every day and give this region its distinct quality of life. We simply tallied the votes, applied a bit of editorial spit-shine.

Gratitude, as always, goes to our contributors; editorial, design and sales teams; and the production wizards who transform your raw enthusiasm into this massive sheaf of awesomeness. And also, of course, to the local businesses who keep the lights on for us.

So raise a glass, a fork, an eyebrowโ€”to the Best of the North Bay. The world may be in flux, but here, our collective spirit remains delightfully and defiantly whole.
