To diehard deadheads, it was a treat last weekend to see Peter Apfelbaum playing with Dafnis Prieto in Healdsburg; after all, his Hieroglyphics Ensemble opened a few shows for the Grateful Dead in the 1990s. Also playing in that band was a young Will Bernard, learning from masters like Don Cherry and soaking in the experience which led him to found T.J. Kirk with Charlie Hunter and become a constant presence in the Stanton Moore Trio. These days, Bernard is all manner of busy with his own band, but plays a rare show this weekend with Robert Walter and Simon Lott. Walter, who plays with the Greyboy Allstars, has a long history with Bernard, but adding to the mix is Lott’s New Orleans–drenched rhythms. It’s bound to be another full dancefloor when the Will Bernard Trio hits town on Sunday, June 27, at the Hopmonk Tavern. 230 Petaluma Ave., Sebastopol. 8:30pm. $15–$18. 707.829.7300.
