Alexandra Jacopetti Hart is credited for the rise of “funk and flash”—not the Sebastopol clothing store, but the art of turning hippie garb into high fashion with her book Native Funk & Flash. Now 73, Hart first learned to sew by taking apart her aunts hand-me-downs to make them fit right; once she realized she didn’t have to stick to the patterns she was taught, there was no turning back.
