Santa Rosa resident Clark Swarthout is an artistic late bloomer, having spent 40 years on the seas as a navigation officer on American merchant ships. Retiring four years ago, Swarthout put down the compass and picked up a pen, creating in intricately detailed and wildly imaginative works done in ink. Despite having no formal training, Swarthout has proven himself a natural talent, and has already shown at galleries and businesses in Sonoma County and San Francisco. This week, Swarthout celebrates the opening reception of his current solo show on Friday, Jan. 15, at Santa Rosa City Hall Council Chambers, 100 Santa Rosa Ave., Ste. 10, Santa Rosa. 5pm.
