In an all-caps explanation about “YOUNGER, MORE ECLECTIC-MINDED POP CULTURE FANS” so crazy over Penguin shirts and Amy Winehouse that they’re “DELVING INTO ALL THINGS RETRO,” Blue Note records has announced the reissue of twelve best-selling titles on vinyl with a bonus CD inside.
Titles include: Cannonball Adderly, Somethin’ Else; Kenny Burrell, Midnight Blue; Dexter Gordon, Go!; Joe Henderson, Page One; Lee Morgan, The Sidewinder; Horace Silver, Song for my Father; Art Blakey, Moanin’; John Coltrane, Blue Train; Herbie Hancock, Maiden Voyage; Hank Mobley, Soul Station; Wayne Shorter, Speak No Evil; and McCoy Tyner, The Real McCoy.
(No Out to Lunch? Tsk.)
The titles run about $20. Truly an idea whose time has come. Oh wait—it already did. Get with it, Impulse!

Dude,
careful, some of the vinyl BN issues are out of absolute phase, as compared to the CD and the original vinyl issues.
Yet another re-release of re-released materials. And you know what? Jazz suckers buy the shit every single time. I went to a pal’s house last year, and he had SEVEN versions of Blue Train on CD, and let’s not talk about his LP collection. It’s fucking hilarious, I tell you. Why so funny? Because the man puts the newest-latest-bestest version onto his fidelity-slaughtering iPod. Unless you’re down with a mongo-serious home hi-fi system (notice that NOBODY owns these any longer…when is the last time a neighbor slammed the neighborhood with booming tunes? weeellll….maybe in Santa Rosa where there are probably more sets of working Optimus speakers than anywhere in the world), buying regurgitated tracks, repackaged, is the equivalent of flying your “I’m a Consumer God Damn It, Not a Citizen” flag high high high into the winds. Hey, it’s cool…let it flap, baby, but I will call you a Sucker Supreme.
Not so brilliant, Todd. Dumb ass!
Well the hope here is for a more decent price on the vinyl, since the CD included is the same issue that Blue Note has out, which for many of the recordings means the very sucky RVG edition. But with the screw up on the absolute phase, which granted, only a microscopic amount of listeners will know or care about, really sucks …
I wasn’t too psyched about these until I had some in my hands. MMmmmm records. Blue Note always has the most perfect, beautiful packaging.
