The odds were against Winston Foster. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Foster was raised in an orphanage and shunned due to his albinism. But under the moniker Yellowman, he went on to become a widely celebrated reggae and dancehall. Embraced by the growing hip-hop scene of the ’80s and ’90s, Yellowman again fought the odds when a battle with skin cancer left his face disfigured. Following the ordeal, Yellowman re-invented himself with more socially conscious material and rose to international fame.
