'Miss Representation' tackles media portrayal

In 2011, Coed Magazine ranked sex icons Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton among the most popular women on the internet, while female leaders Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama barely scraped the bottom of the list.

Yes, women have understatedly walked a tough road to simply enroll in college, land a career or cast a vote. Challenging one of the toughest obstacles American women and girls face today, Marin resident Jennifer Siebel Newsom—wife of Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom—wrote, produced and directed Miss Representation, a film exposing the mass media’s distorted portrayal of women and their value in society. With more than 1 million views since its release, the documentary has stirred up a cross-generational movement for change. See it on Wednesday, March 21, at Sonoma State University. 1801 E. Cotati Ave., Rohnert Park. 7pm. Free. 707.664.2815.
