August 5: Dubee at the Phoenix Theater

The Vallejo rapper Dubee is best known as one of the few Bay Area MCs to benefit from the glory days of major-label signings gone amok in the 1990s. (Dubee a.k.a. Sugawolf, his debut album on Atlantic Records, is still his best-selling.) A lesser-known fact is that on Nov. 1, 2004, a date Bay Area hip-hop heads have memorized as the night Mac Dre was murdered on a freeway outside Kansas City, it was Dubee who was driving his cuddie in the van. He performs this weekend with Mac Mall, another major-label player and close friend of Mac Dre who’s managed to balance religious messages with THC jokesterism like 2006’s Thizziana Stoned and the Temple of Shrooms. 11/5, City P and R.O.D. open on Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Phoenix Theater. 201 E. Washington St., Petaluma. 8pm. $25. 707.762.3565.
