Smack in the middle of the 1980s, just after Reagan had been elected to a second term and Quincy Jones had assembled “We Are the World,” a band from Los Angeles founded an entirely new world with themselves as the only residents. Ska, punk, funk, metaland rap all found a home on the first eponymous EP by the flamboyant band Fishbone, and as the 1980s receded away, the decade changed completely from Fishbone’s attack both in musical style (Mr. Bungle, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus) and fashion sense (that’s a Fishbone shirt John Cusack is wearing in the iconic boombox scene in Say Anything).
