Although a successful financier and billionaire, Warren Hellman is still known to most as the guy who lovably bankrolls the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park every year. He converted to the things in life that really matter, he says, when “I realized ‘important investment banker’ was an oxymoron.” He now devotes most of his time trying to learn the banjo in the style of his heroes like Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson, and seems perfectly thrilled to spend untold dollars on his festival. He speaks and makes self-deprecating jokes on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 142 Throckmorton Theatre. 142 Throckmorton, Mill Valley. 7pm. $12–$15. 415.383.9600.
