You Are the Dancing Queen

Thank you so much for the wonderful article on contra dancing and contra-style community building (“Dancing in Unity,” March 14). Juliane Poirier has captured the welcoming energy of the North Bay Contra dance community perfectly. We are fortunate in the North Bay to be able to enjoy a high-spirited contra dance with live music almost every weekend. Contra dances are held not only in Petaluma, but also in Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, San Rafael, Ukiah and now in Sonoma, too. Dates and times are listed at www.nbcds.org. Juliane is a terrific writer and I will now look for her name in future Bohemian articles, and I also hope to meet her on the dance floor.

Gluten-Free for Profit

In spite of the advice of the medical community years ago, Whole Foods Markets promoted products in its advertising materials reported to combat a candida craze. As the medical community kept stating, candida was not the cause of nearly every disease known to man. Eventually, the anti-candida market crashed.

Once again, Whole Foods is misleading the public with false information. This time in its latest weekly advertising pamphlet, Whole Foods states that 30 percent of the population is gluten-intolerant. I am curious as to where they got their numbers.

According to medical sources, celiac disease affects no more than 1 percent of the population. Medical sources also state that non-celiac gluten sensitivity affects between 5 to 7 percent of the population.

With a wide spectrum of general conditions, too many symptoms are ascribed to the popular “gluten intolerance” when they are in fact, symptomatic of something else (just as with the candida craze).

Thanks, Whole Foods. At least your marketing is consistent.

A Common Enemy

Interesting that learned citizen M.Z. Swartz does not seem to mind if insurance pays for Viagra much less the overblown “war on religious freedom” that Republicans fabricated around the contraception “controversy.” We’re in agreement that it is a crock—and so it goes—endless bickering over mindless issues like contraception, gay marriage, and war on fill-in-the-blank! In this, we behave exactly according to plan while Big Money laughs all the way to the bank. To wit:

“Capital must protect itself in every possible way, both by combination and legislation. Debts must be collected, mortgages foreclosed as rapidly as possible. When, through the process of law, the common people lose their homes, they will become more docile and more easily governed through the strong arm of government applied by a central power of wealth under leading financiers. These truths are well known among our principal men who are now engaged in forming an imperialism to govern the world. By dividing the voter through the political party system, we can get them to expend their energies in fighting for questions of no importance. It is thus by discreet action we can secure for ourselves that which has been so well planned and so successfully accomplished.”—American Bankers Association, 1924

Those who occupy are on to this—globally—and Big Money knows it, responding with ever more restrictions in efforts to thwart their inevitable fall. Best to put our petty differences aside long enough to take down a common enemy intent on controlling us all.

Occidental

Funny thing. It’s come to our attention that last week’s letter was in fact written not by “M. Z. Swartz,” as the letter was signed, but by longtime reader Michael Zebulon. Here’s something even funnier: Two years ago, he chided us for the titles we gave people’s letters to the editor, saying “don’t mess with somebody’s letter.” Who’s messing with the letters now, M.Z.? Anyway, those crying over their keyboards trying in vain to Google “M.Z. Swartz” can now pay all diminishing heed to Michael Zebulon. And now, we have typed the words “Michael Zebulon” far too many times, and will listen to some Napalm Death to clear out our system.
