.Art Stuff You Shouldn’t Miss

Closed 18 months ago for building repairs, the Gallery of Sea and Heaven rebounds on Saturday, Aug. 21, with an opening reception from 5pm to 8pm. Leased by Becoming independent, the Gallery of Sea and Heaven provides a gallery space for BI clients who participate in that program’s innovative fine arts program. Pairing BI clients with professional fine artists is among the gallery’s many pleasures. The gallery’s re-establishment is also guaranteed to add fire back into the South A Street arts scene as the warren of six studios behind the main gallery are quickly filling with artists eager to get to work; one studio is always reserved for BI artists. Look for the reception to be as much a party as anything else, with live music, entertainers from the BI community, plenty of food and plenty of high spirits. “We want to showcase the vendors who serve us,” says BI art production coordinator Barbara Harris, “and we want to showcase our work.” According to Harris, the message is easy and it’s clear: “We’re open. Again!”

The Gallery of Sea and Heaven, 312 South A St., Santa Rosa. Reception, 5pm to 8pm. 707.524.6634.

Wil Smith can draw just like ringing a bell. The Quicksilver Mine Co. in Sebastopol honors him with “One Across the Bow,” a one-man show of works on paper opening on Saturday, Aug. 21, from 4pm to 6pm. Bearing still vestiges of his tuteluge under SSU prof Kurt Kemp, Smith’s funny manic drawings at first aim to charm. It’s the second and the third looks that reveal a deeper intent at work, and the craftsmanship begs those many looks.

Anya Gallacio is a YBA. Not a Youth Buttermilk Associate but rather, a Young British Artist, one of the rarified few, including bad boy Damien Hirst, who were found and hailed by the influential Saatchi Gallery from 1992 onwards. Gallacio works with natural materials and is infinitely interested in decay and mutability of objects. Naturally, she’s interested in wine. The Slaughterhouse Space at the Duchamp Winery have paired Gallacio up with vintner emeritus Zelma Long, one of California’s first female winemakers, to create something very special—an artist-inspired Zinfanel flight that creates a portrait of Sonoma County. The Slaughterhouse Space hosts a dinner pairing those wines with food and the two artists on Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 6pm to 9pm. Curator Lee Plested will discuss Gallacio’s work in general and in specifics about this collaboration, titled Motherlode. This is guaranteed to be a never-forgotten night.

Slaughterhouse Space, at the Duchamp Winery, 280 Chiquita Road, Healdsburg. Wed., Aug. 25, from 6pm to 9pm. $75. 707.431.1514.
